Acceptance of any contribution, gift or grant is at the discretion of the The SoundMind Project. The The SoundMind Project will not accept any gift unless it can be used or expended consistently with the purpose and mission of the The SoundMind Project.

No irrevocable gift, whether outright or life-income in character, will be accepted if under any reasonable set of circumstances the gift would jeopardize the donor’s financial security.

The The SoundMind Project will refrain from providing advice about the tax or other treatment of gifts and will encourage donors to seek guidance from their own professional advisers to assist them in the process of making their donation.

The The SoundMind Project will accept donations of cash or publicly traded securities. Gifts of in-kind services will be accepted at the discretion of the The SoundMind Project.

Certain other gifts, real property, personal property, in-kind gifts, non-liquid securities, and contributions whose sources are not transparent or whose use is restricted in some manner, must be reviewed prior to acceptance due to the special obligations raised or liabilities they may pose for The SoundMind Project.

The The SoundMind Project will provide acknowledgments to donors meeting tax requirements for property received by the charity as a gift. However, except for gifts of cash and publicly traded securities, no value shall be ascribed to any receipt or other form of substantiation of a gift received by The SoundMind Project.

The The SoundMind Project will respect the intent of the donor relating to gifts for restricted purposes and those relating to the desire to remain anonymous. With respect to anonymous gifts, the The SoundMind Project will restrict information about the donor to only those staff members with a need to know.

The The SoundMind Project will not compensate, whether through commissions, finders' fees, or other means, any third party for directing a gift or a donor to the The SoundMind Project.

Patient Education Animation

We work with healthcare workers to create tools that help them better communicate with their patients. In this animation, we are demonstrating an approach we use that allows physicians and other healthcare workers to write a script and have that animated. We observed that many people who don’t take their blood pressure medication don’t understand the actual reason for keeping blood pressure under control. This video is used in hospitals to help a patient understand the pathophysiology of stroke and improve adherence to these medications.

Dica de Diabetes

In this project, we worked with artist Sarah Dobbins to create a year’s worth of weekly comics to help Portuguese speakers in Fall River, MA, understand how to manage their diabetes and improve their eating habits. Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke, and both stroke and diabetes were higher than average in this population. These comics presented simple tips (‘dicas’) each week in the local Portuguese-language newspaper.

Animated Bioethics

We worked with world-renowned bioethicist Dan Wikler on this project to make the process of making ethical decisions more accessible to public health students studying at Harvard and MIT. These videos have since become integrated into the core curriculum at Harvard School of Public Health.Ethical dilemmas are thought experiments that help a person to sort out their core values. Details are removed from a more real-life scenario in order to get down to this core belief. Once the thought experiment is worked through, this person is then better able to act on those values when making real world decisions. The bioethics curriculum at Harvard School of Public Health focuses on some tough decisions that healthcare workers often have to make when there isn’t enough medication to go around – and sometimes even when there is.

The Bhutan Epilepsy Project

This project was conceived of by Dr. Hannah McLane when she was at the Harvard School of Public Health in 2011. While there, she came up with the idea that EEG headsets that are traditionally used for gaming could be applied in a medical setting and hooked up to a mobile phone. This simple idea became what we call The Bhutan Epilepsy Project, and has brought a much needed diagnostic tool to an extremely remote area of the world; this initiative is now being expanded to other countries.
